Understanding and Training an Afghan Hound

Afgan Hound

This is a very athletic, sight sensitive dog that needs daily, energetic off-lead runs to satisfy their exercise requirements. However, unless properly supervised and controlled, the Afghan can catch sight of prey and be out of sight in a matter of seconds. Do not under-estimate the dog's speed and ability to clear fences.

Afghans are known to be independent and aloof (often in the form of conceit), yet keen & sensitive. Ongoing obedience is necessary to reinforce whatever bond the dog is capable of sustaining (some more than others), including the ability to recall from a chase. Only use patient and persuasive techniques - never harsh, endless jerking on the lead, as such disrespect will likely be met with flat-out resistance and perhaps nervous behaviour.

Known to be quiet and dignified in the home. The Afghan is best suited to an active, calm owner who can keep up with the necessary, intense daily exercise and be quite happy to lounge with the dog indoors - relaxed & willing to ritually groom the dog as needed for both coat maintenance and bonding purposes. The Afghan is a willing, but not forced "team player".

Brief History

With the name deriving from Afghanistan, the Afghan Hound was used as a sight hound to locate prey. Although not as fast as a Greyhound, the Afghan has the added build (high hipbones) for agility, helping the breed to excel in the hunt over rugged terrain.
