Dog Training for Akitas and Akita puppies

Akita dog training at Royvon

Akitas attract attention because they are very handsome specimens with dense, interesting and often unique markings. They also command attention with their outward, yet calm courage, confidence and dignity. But know that Akitas were bred to hunt large game and guard with extreme loyalty, and given the intense nature of their work, they are known to display status-oriented behaviour to individuals not viewed as equal. Also know that the Akita is independent, intelligent and self-governing, therefore they can be easily bored and aloof and sometimes stubborn with needless or tedious human intervention. These dominant qualities may manifest into aggression when the breed is under socialised, under stimulated, disrespected or challenged, and many Akitas with behaviour problems are a result of such mis-handling and mis-understanding of the breed.

An Akita that is equally matched, respected and well led is the dignified and immensely loyal and head-turning companion that most people seek out when choosing the breed. Royvon Dog Training Schools has seen the best and worst of both worlds, most importantly have been successful in training inexperienced Akita owners on how to handle and make the most of this magnificent breed.

Royvon specialise in recall training for Akitas.

Breed Characteristics Breed Awareness/Management

This is a very assertive & strong willed breed.

The Akita requires strong leadership and full, ongoing obedience training from a respectful handler who is firm & consistent, and rewards via high praise without demanding too much repetition in a single session.

Also undemonstrative, determined & independent, one can never be quite sure if and when the Akita will lose their cool.

Early and ongoing socialisation & training is of utmost importance to keep the breed tolerant of strangers and other dogs.

The Akita will only respond to strong leadership plus respect, repaying such an owner in equal doses of loyalty no matter the circumstances.

Be reminded of the Tokyo rail station statue of the faithful Akita "Hachiko", who waited 9 years at the station for his master who had died at work.

Generally dignified, calm & easy-going, the Akita still requires plenty of activity.

A perfect owner for an Akita is one who is equally-matched in mind & body and enjoys the immense rewards that come from each other's company, including plenty of exercise, socialisation and safe games (no aggressive games).
