Understanding and Training a Borzoi

The Borzoi is gentle & aloof and often compared to a cat, with gracious house manners and a natural respect for humans.  They should live with a quiet, calm family, ideally without any children or other pets, as they can suddenly snap with lightning fast reflexes if teased or startled, and they do have chasing instincts.

They are highly intelligent and can be fast learners with the appropriate motivation.  However, know that they are easily bored with repetition and can be stubborn if the training is becomes meaningless.  Furthermore, as a sensitive breed, they require high praise and absolutely no harsh treatment, which includes a raised voice.

This dog was bred to course in pairs, a feat that requires elegant speed, coodination and considerable bravery.  As a result, this is a proud, aristocratic breed that is independent in nature, yet is still faithful to their owner.
