Recall
How do I get my dog back? My dog won't come back when I call!
The recall command is indisputably one of the most important commands a dog can learn, first and foremost for safety purposes which is why great importance should be placed on recall training for dogs. However, there are many reasons why some dogs are more problematic recalling than others leading many owners to ask 'how do I teach my dog recall?'.
The following are the main reasons why this might be the case:
- Breed Specific Recall Problems: Scent dogs and other purposely bred working dogs are easily overcome by their instincts.
- Associations with Recalls: The dog has learned that recall to the owner means the end of the adventure, or that recall sometimes results in punishment and they cannot make the logical link that they were punished for not recalling in the first place, only that they were punished for recalling!
- Weighing Rewards against Recalling: The reward to explore and play is higher than the reward to recall to the owner.
- Recall Distractions: The dog is so overwhelmed by distractions, they block the rest of the world out, including the recall command
- No Consequences: The owner has made a practice of going to the dog, therefore the dog has little reason to keep track or to go to the owner when recalled.
- A Game: The owner has made a practice of playing chase with the dog and the dog has learned how to turn recall into a fun, "chase me" game.
- Relationship: The dog does not view the owner in a leadership position thus meets, greets, investigates and generally makes their own decisions on their own terms.
- Inconsistency: The recall command is inconsistent, so the dog opts for the preferred choice at the moment.
- Poor Handling: The owner does not know how to recall their dog properly, i.e. too quiet, too frantic, poor timing, poor body posture, etc.
- Not Trained: The dog simply does not understand the recall command because it has not benefitted from recall training.
The reality of poor recall is that it is likely that the owner has inadvertently made all these mistakes and perhaps more. Recall training for dogs can help correct the effects of these mistakes. It is understandable that if your dog is in any perceived danger - running towards traffic, ensuing panic in a public environment, lost, etc., as the dog's owner, you will use every tactic imaginable in order to get your dog back and under control. And, the more mistakes you make in teaching or using the command, the more it breaks down.

Effective Dog Recall Training will make a real difference in most cases. There is not one solution for every dog, owner and situation. The key is knowing the recall formulae for your specific dog, why they work and when to vary the tactics within those formulae. Royvon dog recall training can identify these formulae as well as teach you how to prevent recall mistakes in the future.
Recall is a very important, vitally crucial command. If you are experiencing difficulties, don't be ashamed to find help by using dog recall training for your dog's safety, well being and your own piece of mind.
This is covered in its entirety on our Complete Training Package but can also be taught on its own on a specialist 7 day program that explains how to get your dog back and just covers dog recall training, see details below. |
