Understanding and Training a Neapolitan Mastiff

Despite its fighting history, today's Neapolitan is generally calm and friendly, most especially with people they know well. Regardless of their slow & steady demeanour, they require extensive early and ongoing socialisation to prevent over-protection and aggression with other dogs.

The breed is stubborn, but responsive to training. Repetition is not usually necessary, as the Neapolitan will obey once it is understood what is required.

Neapolitan Mastiffs tend to be dominant dogs (males over females). It is of utmost importance that this breed be taught from puppy-hood that the owner is the leader of the pack - a hierarchy that they will respect, honour and fiercely defend.

This is a highly protective, vigilant and courageous dog. Although they may seem slightly aloof, they do need to be with family. They will also be wary of strangers, but will warm up to them once they get to know them and consider them friends.
