How to recognise a quality Trainer/Behaviourist -
There are many people out there claiming to be Trainers and/or Behaviourists, therefore it is necessary to know what to look for when employing the services of a canine professional - this is above & beyond what is written on paper, as such information may be difficult to verify and qualify.
Consider the following approaches:
- Have they been referred by someone you trust? Is it possible to observe them working; see the results of their work, or read case studies supporting their work?
- Do they listen? Are they genuinely empathetic to your feelings and
needs, yet forthcoming with possible solutions and expectations?
- Are they generally knowledgeable, yet flexible with offering solutions
that best suit you, your dog and your lifestyle with your dog?
- Are their theories and practises forward-thinking, as there have been (and continue to be) many recent advancements in dog behaviour and training?
- Are they able to clearly explain the purpose of their recommendations, including if and how they address the source of the problem?
"Keep in mind that it's difficult to follow a programme if you do not know why the exercises are important."
