Dog Training Frequently Asked Questions

਍ഀ

Is it really necessary to train my dog?

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Yes! Most importantly, a well trained dog is a happy dog. And, for਍ഀ most of us, dogs are members of our family and of course we care about਍ഀ their well-being! We also want to be able to walk, socialise, travel਍ഀ and holiday with our dogs and not have to think about disasters਍ഀ occurring because they are out of our control. It’s not only socially਍ഀ unacceptable, it’s plain just not fun.਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Dog training is not just for dogs already displaying problems,਍ഀ and just because your dog is behaving now, does not mean that problems਍ഀ won’t develop as the dog matures. Like children, behaviour modification਍ഀ must be established and consistent, and when you learn how to਍ഀ communicate with your dog, and your dog is unde/pyour control at all਍ഀ times, you’ve created a bond and a relationship that will enrich your਍ഀ life – forever!
਍ഀ

There are a lot of training methods out there, and it’s਍ഀ perfectly normal to feel intimidated, or to admit that you don’t know਍ഀ where to start or what’s best for you and your dog. Following is a list਍ഀ of frequently asked questions to help you know what to expect with the਍ഀ Royvon Training Programme. We also encourage you to review our Training਍ഀ page for a complete course overview and aftercare support.

਍ഀ

You’ve invested in a dog, now invest in your future together!

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Is my dog suitable for the programme?

਍ഀ

਍ഀ The first 3 days of the course is an assessment period, and during this਍ഀ time we are able to determine your dog’s ultimate success probability਍ഀ within the programme. There are 2 evaluating factors: the first is how਍ഀ your dog is adapting to the new environment. If there is a continued਍ഀ high level of anxiety stress, then our methods have a less than਍ഀ opportune chance of registering with your dog. The second is if we਍ഀ feel, for whatever extenuating reasons, unable to train the dog to our਍ഀ 100% standard. Both cases are extremely rare, in fact, less than 2% of਍ഀ trainee dogs are sent home following this assessment period. And,਍ഀ should there be an unfortunate case, the dog will be returned home at਍ഀ our expense, a full deposit will be refunded and no further fees will਍ഀ be expected.਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Can’t I just train my dog myself?

਍ഀ

Well, yes, you can. However, here are some important facts for you਍ഀ to consider before you take on the task. Dog psychology and training is਍ഀ a work of art, a well-seasoned profession. Dogs, over time, have taken਍ഀ a lot of abuse through irresponsible ownership and training. Some਍ഀ breeds have gotten bad reputations as a result, and quite often at no਍ഀ fault of their own. The time and energy to research a proper dog਍ഀ training procedure, let alone practise is more than most people can਍ഀ spare. And, when executed incorrectly, it puts unnecessary wear and਍ഀ tear on your dog, not to mention can be very frustrating for you. Our਍ഀ team of Experts train dogs as efficiently, effectively and humanely as਍ഀ possible, and provide you with the tools to keep your dog under your਍ഀ control for the rest of your lives together. It is a very small਍ഀ investment for a member of your family. Think very seriously if this is਍ഀ something that is in the best interest of you and your dog.਍ഀ ਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ ਍ഀ

What training methods do you use?

਍ഀ

Our well-refined methods are based on timely, consistent, reward/no਍ഀ reward reinforcement theories. No harsh methods are ever used. It is a਍ഀ common misconception that a dog’s brain works much like a human brain,਍ഀ however the rules of communication between us are far from similar.਍ഀ Once you’ve channeled into a dog’s level of learning and understand the਍ഀ procedures, the results will astound you! It is a definite,਍ഀ overwhelming feeling of pride for both you and your dog.਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Will my dog listen to me once we’re home together?

਍ഀ

Yes, and here’s how it works: Each trainee dog is designated to one਍ഀ Royvon trainer. Although this is a necessary step for bonding purposes,਍ഀ your dog is not being taught to listen to just this one person, in਍ഀ fact, quite the contrary – what your dog is really learning a਍ഀ communication procedure from an expert in the field of study.਍ഀ Therefore, it is important for you to learn the procedure as well to਍ഀ continue the success beyond the programme. Be prepared to spend the 3਍ഀ hours at our Centre at the end of the course for this purpose, and be਍ഀ true to your new responsibility as your dog’s owner. We are always here਍ഀ to help you through the process, and we strongly encourage you to use਍ഀ us as needed.

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

What standard can I expect from the training?

਍ഀ

਍ഀ Once your dog passes the 3 day assessment period, we guarantee full਍ഀ control both on and off the lead at the conclusion of the course਍ഀ programme. A full demonstration of all your dog’s new skills will be਍ഀ presented to you as such, complete with natural distractions as they਍ഀ would occur in an every day environment.਍ഀ ਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

What is the ideal age for a dog to register to the training programme?

਍ഀ

We accept dogs from the age of 6 months forward. Although there is਍ഀ no upper limit, please understand that the older the dog, the longer਍ഀ its had to settle into its behaviour. With that said, the ideal age is਍ഀ between 8 months and 18 months. Breeds do differ in maturity, so if਍ഀ there is any apprehension for any reason, please contact us.਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

How is my dog’s delivery handled?

਍ഀ

We have a collection service the covers all of the United Kingdom.਍ഀ Upon registration, convenient pick-up and delivery arrangements can be਍ഀ made to the nearest Royvon training centre. This service is charged at਍ഀ a rate of 25p per mile, plus tolls, where applicable. We do, however,਍ഀ encourage delivery by the owner as it gives the opportunity to survey਍ഀ our facility. It is important for both you and your dog to feel good਍ഀ about everything in regards to the training process.਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

How many dogs do you train per month?

਍ഀ

Our Centres will vary in size and staff. The maximum number of dogs਍ഀ any one of our trainers would have in one month’s time is 10. And, even਍ഀ though your dog is assigned to one trainer, there are many other staff਍ഀ members that contribute to your dog’s happiness and well-being while਍ഀ staying as a guest with us.਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Will my dog’s temperament or personality change?

਍ഀ

No. Learning to communicate with your dog means learning to shape਍ഀ and control your dog’s actions, not altering its inherent personality.਍ഀ Excitable, curious or aggressive dogs will return to you as they are,਍ഀ with the exception that you now have the ability to enter any਍ഀ environment with any distractions under your rules, not your dog’s.਍ഀ Highly stressed or anxious dogs, however, may experience benefits in਍ഀ temperament through training because often times stress is a result of਍ഀ jumbled messages from the environment – when a communication procedure਍ഀ is established and exercised, the world from your dog’s point of view਍ഀ isn’t so overwhelmingly frightful.

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Where will my dog sleep?

਍ഀ

਍ഀ The Royvon Petcare Centre kennel accommodation was demolished and਍ഀ rebuilt in 2000 to the strictest of standards. Our pledge to you is our਍ഀ commitment to ensure your dog’s stay be a happy, healthy and safe one.਍ഀ You are welcome to visit our facilities with no prior appointment.

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

How will I know how the course is proceeding?

਍ഀ

਍ഀ Part of Royvon’s success is due to the extensive communication between਍ഀ you and your dog’s assigned trainer throughout the entire training਍ഀ process. Usually from as early as the moment of first inquiry to our਍ഀ training programme through your dog’s post-training aftercare, we will਍ഀ glean and thoroughly understand your dog’s behavioural traits and your਍ഀ subsequent challenges. At every stage you will be aware of what to਍ഀ expect from us and what is to be expected from you. This includes਍ഀ telephone or email updates during the training course itself, and our਍ഀ continued support as needed from there forward.਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Do you ever use check chains?

਍ഀ

As a company, we do not have a problem with the use of check chains਍ഀ when they are used correctly. However, in the hands of irresponsible or਍ഀ “hack” handlers this method can be harmful, therefore is viewed਍ഀ negatively within some training circles. We would never recommend the਍ഀ use of a check chain unless one of our expert personnel has trained the਍ഀ owner first.

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Are any one of the Centres better than the other?

਍ഀ

਍ഀ All of our Centres are, and will be held under the same, strict set਍ഀ standard. Every dog trainer and member of our staff have received the਍ഀ same level of training and have been recruited specifically for their਍ഀ ability to carry out the duties and responsibilities of their job. You਍ഀ can be assured that all staff under the Royvon umbrella are਍ഀ professionals in their field. Our Pledge is our commitment to ensure਍ഀ that your pet’s stay with us is a happy, healthy and safe one. Visits਍ഀ to our facilities are encouraged, no prior appointment necessary.਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Will my dog miss me?

਍ഀ

Of course! But, please be assured that our training is in a loving਍ഀ and caring environment. Your dog will be in a comfortable and clean਍ഀ accommodation, and kept quite happy and busy with training and other਍ഀ activities.਍ഀ

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Why is the training programme residential?

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

Controlling the distracting influences of your dog’s environment਍ഀ immediately puts focus on the attention of the trainer. This attention਍ഀ then becomes an inherent, repeated reward that helps to mold the਍ഀ communication procedure process. Thus, training is an enjoyable਍ഀ experience from the get go, and new distractions can then be introduced਍ഀ without disturbing the interest your dog has with learning and਍ഀ ultimately being predictably obedient.

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

How much does the training programme cost?

਍ഀ

਍ഀ Our 3 week course is £550 +VAT, and our 10-day, more intensive course,਍ഀ is £508 +VAT. Our fees cover, full accommodation, training and tuition਍ഀ for the owner at the conclusion of the course. Delivery service is਍ഀ extra and charged at 25p per mile, plus toll, where applicable

਍ഀ ਍ഀ

May I receive a discount for registering 2 dogs?

਍ഀ

਍ഀ Yes. We will offer a 10% discount on the second dog booked for training.
